"Methods Of Barbarism"

This morning, went on the Hither Green historic walk conducted by Godfrey Smith. Very interesting, learned quite a few things I didn't know about my local area, including just quite how much it was bombed during the war - including the local hospital - and also how land speculation by developers is centuries old and has always had it in for the little guy, ever since the Enclosure Act.

In the afternoon went to a meeting at the Tamil Temple off Lee High Road for a meeting on the desperate situation in NE Sri Lanka. Cllr Pete Pattison and Simon Hughes MP were the invited speakers, but I was asked to do an impromptu as the local ward councillor. Found myself quoting Campbell-Bannerman, Gladstone and John Donne. But Pete and Simon were better.

Hither Green Spring Fayre

Just come back from Hither Green Spring Fayre, heavy laden with DVDs, historic photos, tomato plants, chocolate and jam (for tomorrow). Good to see Max Calo hard at work on the HGCA stall. The HGCA has done a great job. Good stalls. Friendly vibe. Band played ABBA on request. What more could you ask for? Well, my volunteering to go to the organ recital at St Swithun's this evening, and on a historic walk around Hither Green tomorrow morning. Bit of bad news though: new Mountsfield Park cafe vandalised overnight even before it's open!

Lewisham High Street attack

From yesterday's South London Press:

By John Hugill

A 16-YEAR-OLD was stabbed and his 48-year-old dad suffered head injuries after a group of youths fought close to Lewisham Fire Station.

Cops were called to Lewisham High Street at around 5.30pm on Wednesday.

When they got there they found the man and his son, who were then taken to hospital.

The 48-year-old has been discharged while his son remains in hospital. His condition is described as "stable".

Six youths have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and are in custody at a south London police station.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the CID at Lewisham police station on 020 8284 8468, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Picture of Health: Good Result for Lewisham

Local councillors' efforts to get a good result from the Picture Of Health consultation have paid off.

The Secretary of State for Health has just published his decision on A Picture of Health following the Independent Reconfiguration Panel's review. The outcome is good for Lewisham. There was a risk that emergency surgery at Lewisham Hosptial would be restricted to 8 am until 8 pm. This will not now happen.

The full IRP report and recommendations are at www.irpanel.org.uk.

As a local councillor for the area where Lewisham Hospital is situated and where many of its employees live, I am delighted by the news. I think that there were serious flaws in the consultation on a A Picture of Health but that thanks to the united front presented by local Liberal Democrats with other parties and ceaseless efforts to influence the review in our favour, we got the best result for Lewisham.

Public transport questions

Currently preparing questions to put to public transport operators (bus, rail, DLR) in the area. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Lewisham Bridge Primary School

Just back from a briefing given to councillors by Lewisham Council officers on the consequences of English Heritage's listing Lewisham Bridge Primary school. I gave my impressions of the meeting live on Twitter (follow link to see what I wrote). Perhaps for the benefit of the Labour councillor for Lewisham Central who yet again failed to attend a key meeting on a ward issue.

Clearly, the listing is a major embarrassment for Lewisham Council, and officers admitted they had got it wrong in not foreseeing that English Heritage might list the building. That lack of foresight is going to cost us dearly: financially and in terms of the delay in getting the extra secondary school places which virtually everyone agrees the north of the Borough needs. As the Defend Education in Lewisham campaign wrote:

Councils can obtain a certificate of immunity from English Heritage if they are concerned that a building might be listable and wish to avoid a last-minute listing. Why did they fail to apply for one?... Did they spot it was listable and decided to ignore it? No listing should come as a shock to a Council"

Having said that, we are (to coin a cliche) where we are. I still think that Lewisham Bridge is the best, or rather the least bad, site for a new secondary school. It is certainly a lot better than Ladywell Pool, which was the other alternative which the Council was considering until the Save The Pool campaign stopped them. If the Council's appeal against listing fails, and they can't then find a way of incorporating English Heritage's concerns in a redesign, that will set back the provision of proper secondary school provision in Lewisham by years.

That would not be good.
