Orpington

For reasons which I won't go into here, I was in Orpington High Street yesterday.  And found a wonderful shop selling memorabilia from long, long ago.  Including a stack of Britischer war comics from the 70s.  Couldn't resist buying a stash for old times sake.

Not the most PC of publications.  I suspect that the portrayal of the Japanese would go down well in Beijing.  Could be a market opporunity there :-)

Had a certain furtive pleasure in wallowing in those days of wartime heroism and late imperial grandeur before joining the EU and political correctness swept it all away.

I tried not to get this dangerous stuff confused with the things I was supposed to be delivering.  But if a number of swing voters in this most marginal of constituencies found themselves targetted with copies of the Victor and the Hornet, any late swing to UKIP and the Tories could be down to me :-(

White Rabbits

The National Front is standing in Lewisham East.  Anybody who isn't working for the Liberal Democrats (or other party of their choice) could do worse than gather at 7pm at Lewisham Town Hall this coming Tuesday and Wednesday from where anti-racist campaigners will be delivering leaflets in Lewisham Central ward urging people to vote for any of the non-racist parties.

BTW today is the first of the month.  White Rabbits Day.  Somehow seems appropriate.

As was the episode of Dr Who yesterday.  Where the last of the Daleks - not known for their tolerance of diversity - was shown to be very, very scared and vulnerable, as well as having an unfortunate tendency to extermination.

personal blog

Will do an update soon, when the General Election is nicely over.  In the meantime, you might like to know that my personal blog is working again.

Or you might not.

Events, Dear Boy

Quite an exciting week.  As even Clement Attlee might have said.

On Tuesday evening, went to a well attended meeting of voluntary organisations and local residents at the Methodist Hall on Albion Way, in Lewisham Town Centre.  There is clearly a lot of unhappiness about the genuineness of the Council's consultation with the local community on the plans to develop Lewisham's Town Centre, including how £600k for a 'community asset' is going to be spent.  This is clearly going to be a big issue for the future.  Also got to taken to task by Sundermeade residents about no progress being made on the issues raised with the Mayor when he visited in February.  I feel a question for Full Council coming on.

On Wednesday, went to a meeting between local residents in the Clarendon Rise and Albion Road area and Council highways officers.  Residents are concerned that the new road traffic scheme in that area might result in significantly increased traffic flows.  That does not seem to have happened so far, except at peak periods when traffic is heavy along Molesworth Road and Lee High Road. But it's early days yet. The signage for the scheme was now in place, and the cameras policing the new bus lanes were operational.  Shortly, people caught on camera violating the bus lines will be sent warning letters.  In a few weeks time, they will get fined.

I am waiting for the reaction.

Thursday was General Election day.  Attended the count for the Deptford constituency.  Saw Joan Ruddock's votes being weighed, although not so many as last time.  Columba Blango, the Liberal Democrat candidate, increased our vote and pushed the Tories into third place.  Deptford was a Green target seat, and I sense Darren Johnson was bitterly disappointed with fourth place.  Felt rather sorry for him.  The reaction of his Labour colleague, Cllr Terry Scott, was somewhat different.

But that's what you get with a rubbish electoral system.  Where one party can govern with only 36% of the votes.  Wouldn't happen in any other country in civilised Europe.

Mixed result for all the parties, I would say.  All were hoping to do better, and probably relieved not to have done worse.  On balance, a good overall result for the Liberal Democrats, but I seem to have helped turn a Tory majority of 200 in Orpington into one of 5,000.  :-(

Sorry to see my Minister, Chris Pond, lose at Gravesham.  A good bloke.  We're going to need to train a new DWP Minister for Europe.

But that pales into insignficance with the Cabinet changes announced over the weekend.

Especially the one involving DWP.  About which I couldn't possibly comment.

Had a surgery at St Swithun's church on Saturday and 50 people came.

It was a wedding.  So my Council duties extended to ushering and providing baby changing facilities.

On Sunday, visited a consituent on Wellmeadow Road who had been experiencing a great deal of hassle from the builders next door, and was exasperated at the lack of support from the Council.

Council Questions

Here are the questions which I've just submitted for the next Full Council meeting on 18 May:

) Why have Lewisham's roadside trees been lopped in recent weeks, when according to one of my constituents "anyone with a knowledge of trees know it is too late to prune trees once the sap has risen".  How many trees are being damaged across the Borough by not pruning at the right time?  What was the cost of doing this, and what steps are being taken to recover money from the contractor?

2) What action points arose from the Mayor's visit on 3 February 2005 to the Sundermeade and Mercator estates and Hither Green; which have been resolved; which have not been resolved, and why not?

3) How does the Deputy Mayor rate the effectiveness of the mechanisms for consulting local residents and voluntary organisations about the regeneration of Lewisham Town Centre, and how could they be improved?

Looking forward to the answers with interest.

School Dinners and other quality public services

I am a member of Lewisham Council's Quality Public Services Committee.  The Committee examines and makes recommendations improving the Council's services in particular areas.  Last year, we covered a range of issues including housing and the Lewisham Local Strategic Partnership.  Members of the Committee have just been asked what areas we should consider for examination in 2005-6.

I'd be grateful for any polite suggestions.

One of my fellow Liberal Democrat councillors has already suggested school meals.

planning pain

Planning issues coming to the fore at the moment.

Last Thursday, I took part in a Council planning commitee of which I am a member. For the first time in a quite a while, I found myself part of a dissenting minority against an application to build an ultra modern design in the Telegraph Hill conservation area. I had no problem with the architect's design. It would have been innovatory and exciting in most parts of Lewisham. But I didn't think it was appropriate to the conservation area. Even though it was just on the boundary of the area and there were some fairly minging buildings nearby. You have to take a stand sometimes, otherwise what is the point of having a conservation area.

And this coming Thursday, Bellway Homes's application for yet more units on the site of the former Hither Green Hopital comes before another Council planning committee (of which I'm not a member). In my view, and that of quite a few local residents, the site already has too many housing units. The area cannot really cope with any more. We'll see i the committee agrees with me.

Finally, I've wrtitten in expressing my concerns at the plans for developing the Thurston Road industrial estate in the north of Lewisham Central ward. I've no problem with the principle of developing the area. But an 18 storey tower block overshadowing local residents is a bit excessive.
