Lewisham Central Localities Fund: £10,000 for our area

Just received the following from Lewisham Council about the £10,000 available for each ward to be spent by local councillors in their area, after consulting local residents:

"One of the main concerns that was expressed last year was the amount of time that was available for consultation with local residents. This year we are beginning the process much earlier to ensure that this experience is not repeated. I plan to send out updated supporting information next week but as there are no changes to the criteria or the amount available (£10,000), please feel free to begin consulting whenever you are ready."

Well, I'm feeling ready, so I'll begin here. Any suggestions for spending 10 grand in Lewisham Central ward gratefully received.

Will post the further details from the Council when I get them.

And while I'm in asking mode, could I have any suggestion for questions which you'd like me to ask at the next Full Council meeting (members of the public can of course ask their own questions at the meeting).

Strolling around with the pram I had an idea for outdoor summer theatre.
We have a wonderful space centrally located in the ward and it is the circular drop in Lewisham Park.
I hope you understand which one I'm talking about, like a small valley, surrounded by tall trees.
What about outdoor theatre coupled with acting workshops for children?
I think that Lewisham Park lends itself very well to something of the like and we have a lot of children that cannot afford holidays that would do with some more constructive activities.

Thank you very much for this suggestion. It'd obviously need to be costed, and I wonder if it might be helped by volunteers/community projects contributing to the construction and/or the workshops.

Max thats a great idea my eldest would enjoy that and it might build his confidence. My younger kids love dancing so perhaps something like that. Its an expensive thing to do other wise and we dont have the space for kids jumping around indoors.
Andrew what kind of questions can be asked and by whom?

Max is the expert at asking public questions at Full Council! You can ask any question relating to the work of the Council, issues it deals with, relations with other bodies. You will get a written answer to the question. If you attend the Council meeting you can ask one oral supplementary about the answer (they're getting quite strict about this). I'm afraid you've just missed the deadline for the June meeting (it was midnight just gone), but you can ask questions for the next meeting on 18 July (deadline midnight 10 July). You need to send the questions to Kevin Flaherty at kevin.flaherty@lewisham.gov.uk

If we start planning for it now we get the best chances to make it happen during summer 2008.
We can ask if the Council can provide further help towards an activity like this one. A probing question.
Then we'll know what we must look for somewhere else.
Maybe the directorate for Children and Young People has some support available.
A bit of money from the locality fund is also a good start to try to get some more funds from private sponsors. Probably speaking with Sainsbury that's just next door would be a good idea.
Then one has to find somebody to actually organise a program and think about the logistics but that cannot be done until one knows the budget and the resources.

The London Bubble Theatre may have ideas and advice, they are appearing at Sydenham Wells Park July 4-7.

There are a number of musicians and theatricals in the area who may wish to be involved?

I believe the a London orchestra has an arrangement with the council to interest youngsters in music.....'come along and play a kettle drum, triangle, trombone etc?

Maybe create an ensemble from scratch, bring any kind of instrument.

Skateboad demonstration. Dog care demonstration with obedience lessons? Fashion show for the best dude and dudess?

Sculpture in the park/s dotted around the parks on temporary basis?

Sire of the Manor Mayor Steve Bullock, may throw his weight behind an open air theatre workshop....
