Full Council meeting 30 June

A quick note on Monday's Full Council meeting. The Mayor of Lewisham updated us on the post office closures. As you may have noticed, the Post Office has ignored local opinion and closed the three threatened post office including that on Hither Green Lane. Lewisham Council is negotiating with the Post Office to see whether some solution could be found similar to that in Essex, but those negotiations are commercial in confidence at the moment.

I moved and spoke to the following motion:

“The council notes with concern that contamination by Legionelle bacteria has caused the closure of Ladywell Leisure Centre pool and urges the Mayor to ensure that when it is reopened it is maintained to a good standard of hygiene."

I had hoped that would have got consensus across the Council chamber on a key local issue but Labour decided to drag national politics into and amended to include reference to the Government's free swimming initiative.

It's all very well having a right to free swimming but it's pretty academic if you can't use it because your pool is closed!

And was it significant that they removed "when it is reopened" from my motion? We shall see.
